growing and growing since tuesday. really a stunning display of community support for these fallen officers. now, some santa cruz police officers may be going back to work today. the police chief told them to take their time with the grieving process. in the meantime, we're hearing more details about the shootings on tuesday. that is part of the gun battle this finally took down accused cop killer jeremy goulet a former marine described by his own father as a ticking time bomb. he was armed with three pistols and wearing body armor after officers say he killed two santa cruz detectives, stole their guns and their unmarked cars. officers found him shot him and killed him half an hour later about a block away. at a vigil last night for the two fallen officers, dozens of people came to mourn detective sergeant loran "butch" baker and detective elizabeth butler, who had gone to goulet's home

to question him about sexual assault allegations. here's baker's daughter ashley. >> my dad told me how smart i was and how proud he was of me. [ crying ] >> and that -- and -- he said he thought about me -- he just made me feel so good. [ crying ] >> reporter: now, when the two detectives came to talk to goulet, they were in plainclothes. we don't know yet if they were wearing body armor. it's often up to the officers. we may hear more at the press conference at 11:30 this morning. officers are also appealing to the public to send in any cell phone video people may have taken of the events on tuesday. and we'll see another new cell phone video clip coming up in the next half hour. right now, live in santa cruz, anne makovec, kpix 5. a fire crew got caught in the crossfire as they headed to

help the fallen officers. the firefighters jumped into action to protect people passing by. the sheriff said some even used their own bodies to shield witnesses from the gunfire. no firefighters by the way or bystanders were injured. the gunman's own father described his son as a ticking time bomb. jeremy goulet's criminal background also cases of being a peeping tom. he was arrested for that in portland, oregon in 2007 and in berkeley last august. neighbors there called police about fights between goulet and his twin brother. he was fired from a coffee shop last friday. >> i just remember he was in intense. something about him was like kind of you know. >> goulet was in the marine reserves from 1996 to 2002 and he worked as a helicopter mechanic and with military police. we are getting a revealing look at the man police say shot

and killed an oakland rapper on the vegas strip. >> you see these, we call that the counting game right here. see what i'm saying, like, ain't the only [ bleep ] who talks about like only -- >> murder suspect ammar harris seen here flashing a stack of $100 bills in a youtube video. police say harris has a violent past including charges for robbery, sexual assault and kidnapping. he is wanted in the shooting and crash that killed three people in las vegas a week ago including oakland rapper kenneth cherry. harris remains on the run. new this morning, san leandro police are looking for an 11-year-old foster child. miles alvarez was dropped off at the madison elementary school on monday and never made it home to his foster parents. investigators suspect miles is with his mother, michelle

alvarez. officers say she has been trying to reunite with him since they were separated. a board voted to fire merel grant who was paid on paid administrative leave last week. a number of parents called for his removal after a special education teacher was allowed to keep her job despite her conviction for kicking a 5-year- old student. other bay area headlines, the lehigh southwest cement company is being sued by the family of the three workers who were killed in a shooting spree at the company's quarry near cupertino. the gunman was former employee shareef allman who killed himself the day after the 2011 rampage. the suit claims the company knew allman was unstable and could have done more to prevent the tragedy. livermore police have arrested three juveniles for making cyber threats against one of the victims of the so- called hummer mom, christine hubbs. the suspects are believed to be friends of hubbs' children. hubbs was convicted of sexually abusing two 14-year-old boys more than two years ago.

switching gears, our first check of weather at 4:37. lawrence is here with a lot of sunshine. >> more and more sunshine. we could see mid-70s in the next couple of days. but i have some rain in the forecast. >> of course. >> that makes me happy. around the bay area today, we have a few high clouds drifting overhead, patchy fog has moved in along the coastline. i think we are going to see most of that disappear over the bay bridge where they are practicing again with the lights this morning. we are looking good. just a little patchy fog in the distance. temperatures not as cold this morning with the cloud cover so we have 50 in san francisco, 46 san jose, 47 concord. high pressure still a flat ridge so we are going to see clouds dump over the top of the ridge from time to time. otherwise, just going to stay very mild to even warm in spots today. could see some low 70s inland maybe about 71 in concord, 71 in livermore, 72 degrees in the napa valley, a lot of 60s inside the bay and at the coastline. more on your weather coming up and hopefully i can find some rain. right now let's check the roads

with elizabeth. >> thank you, lawrence. outside right now things are improving beginning to pick up the overnight roadwork on the 880 freeway on the nimitz past the coliseum. just a few minutes ago we saw traffic nearly stopped in the northbound lanes but again they are working to reopen that roadwork. it was extending from 66th to fruitvale and is scheduled to be picked up by 5 a.m. this morning. elsewhere to the bay bridge now, see if we can see any more flashing lights. a little earlier around 4:30 we saw some police cars blocking a couple of lanes towards the toll plaza. no longer the case, but again caltrans has lanes blocked in the upper deck from the cantilever section towards the island until 5 a.m. that's a check of your bay area traffic. back to you guys. >> thank you. what caused a 61-year-old water main to break in san francisco remains a mystery this morning. that rupture damaged dozens of homes and cars. so much water yesterday morning. kpix 5 reporter cate caugiran joins us from the neighborhood.

how is it looking this morning? >> reporter: it's looking a little bit better than yesterday but you want to take a look at this. the clean-up is far from over. they filled the sinkhole with dirt. they are trying to figure out what happened. yesterday morning a wart pipe burst damaging 23 homes and 12 cars. some cars were halfway submerged in water and mud. hundreds of thousands of gallons pooled at the intersection of 15th avenue and wawona. and if you thought this mess was bad outside, neighbors tell us water spilled into their basement up to three feet high. >> i went downstairs without any boots or anything and i was in water about a foot and a half probably. my car had water in it parked in the garage. so it was quite a mess. >> reporter: now, the good news is no one has been displaced. the city did yellow tag 6 homes which means there was extensive

water damage and building inspectors will check to see if they are structurally safe. in addition to that, we can expect those utility workers again to be back out here this morning. what they are trying to do is repair this road and the sinkhole as quickly as possible. reporting live in san francisco, cate caugiran, back to you. >> yeah, cate. the damage is pretty extensive out there. what role is the city taking in all this? >> reporter: from what i understand yesterday when i spoke with officials, they said the city is prepared to pay for the clean-up and the repair to these homes. >> all right. well, a lot of work yet to be done. cate caugiran live for us here in the city. thanks, cate. oakland mayor jean quan is upbeat about the city's future despite a recent uptick in crime. the issue was the main focus of her annual state of the city address last night. quan admitted it will be tough to meet the goal of increasing the police force from 600 to 800 officers in five years but said there is progress citing plans to add a second police

people pulled over with cameras out people taking pictures. you don't see that very often. new this morning the united states will provide $60 million more in aid for syrian opposition forces. secretary of state john kerry john kerry made the announcement at a meeting in rome today. the u.s. decision is designed to increase the pressure on syrian president assad to step down and pave the way for transition. painful federal budget cuts will kick in, in 16 hours. there seems to be a lack of urgency in the nation's capital. president obama is set to meet with leaders but as cbs news's susan mcginnis report, the meeting will take place after the budget cuts take effect. >> reporter: president obama has softened his language about the impact of the across-the- board budget cuts which kick in tomorrow. >> this is not a cliff.

but it is a tumble downward. >> reporter: still he warned a group of business leaders in washington, d.c. wednesday night that the cuts will hurt. >> this is going to be a big hit on the economy. >> reporter: both sides do seem to agree on one thing. the cuts will begin tomorrow. each side blames the other for lack of action. >> they prefer to keep it alive as a political issue instead. >> reporter: democrats will offer up a plan today but republicans will reject it because along with spending cuts, it includes higher taxes from closing loopholes. >> all we're offered is a gimmicky tax hike that's designed to fail. >> reporter: and a republican bill being proposed today isn't likely to pass either. it gives the president flexibility to decide where to make spending cuts but does not bring in any new revenue. >> at some point, hopefully soon, republicans will understand the need to compromise here. >> reporter: congressional leaders from both parties meet

vatican city right now. cbs news's vinita nair will bring us a live report from the vatican coming up in a few minutes. santa cruz police plan to give us more information this morning about the murders of two officers. kpix 5 reporter anne makovec is in santa cruz this morning where they are mourning those fallen officers. anne. >> reporter: check out this memorial here behind me at the santa cruz police department downtown santa cruz. it has just been growing by the hour. a real outpouring of community support. police officers are appealing for cell phone video trying to put together more pieces of the puzzle of what transpired. a neighbor shot this cell phone video on tuesday showing lawmen slowly moving in formation to check on the suspect's body. they shot and killed 35-year- old jeremy goulet a former marine after they say he killed two santa cruz detectives who had come to his home to question him about an alleged sexual assault. they say he flung open the door

and started firing. the detectives radioed for help as they lay dying and goulet stole their guns and their car. officers shot him a half hour later about a block away. >> there is no doubt in anyone's mind that the officers that engaged goulet stopped an imminent threat to the community and neutralized that problem before it reached out and harmed the people that we're important to protect. >> reporter: dozens of people came to a vigil last night to mourn the loss of 28-year veteran sergeant loran "butch" baker. the chief called him the best investigator in the force. and 10-year detective investigator elizabeth butler who specialized in sexual assaults. all the officers took the day off to mourn yesterday. many of the 100 officers will be returning to work today. that's going to be a slow transition process. the chief says it is up to them when they return to patrolling the streets
